Online shopping has become the new ultimate way to shop. The convenience of getting exactly what you want without leaving the house is unmatched, but it does come with its dangers. As online shopping has grown in popularity, so has the number of criminals looking for a free gift by nabbing packages from people’s houses.
Stealing someone’s mail is a federal crime, but that doesn’t deter some of these porch pirates who often can get away with their crimes because people do not have a proper defense mechanism set up to protect their home. To help keep your home and packages safe, here are our best tips for deterring porch pirates.
A major reason porch pirates can get away with their crimes is due to the fact that hardly anyone sees or questions a person walking up to another person’s door. And it’s not like you can have someone watch your porch at all times, right?
Installing a doorbell camera, or any other outdoor camera, will not only help catch criminals by recording their faces for you to submit in a police report, but criminals are also less likely to rob a house if they see it is protected with cameras to avoid being caught. Covenant’s doorbell cameras will send you a notification to alert you when someone is at your porch so you can be ready to catch them.
Doorbell cameras are excellent for notifying you and for being able to communicate with others via intercom, but the angle of doorbell cameras is limited. Porch pirates can undermine doorbell cameras by obscuring their faces or destroying the camera. A ceiling-mounted camera is harder to see, reach, and destroy. So you can catch everything without giving criminals a chance to work around your defense system. Covenant’s cameras also record everything and save the footage to a DVR without cloud storage or SD cards.

Install an Access Control system
Access control systems allow for you to control who has access to your home or property by granting access codes or using an intercom system.
You can set up one-time access codes to give delivery people so that your packages can be kept inside your home rather than be left on your porch while staying safe and secure.

Request for your delivery to require a signature
Often online retailers will require a signature for large or especially expensive items but requesting a signature for all of your packages will guarantee that they are given to no one other than you or your approved friends and family.
If no one is there to sign off on the package, they’ll be taken back to the carrier’s site where you know they will be safely stowed until you can come to pick them up in your own time.
Request for nondescript packaging
Some packages promote their branding with fun printed boxes, but certain brands can pique the interest of criminals who may be drawn to the brand names. You can request most retailers for nondescript packaging for a more inconspicuous delivery to deter the attention of porch pirates.
Offer a hiding spot
The age-old trick to preventing porch pirates is to keep a conveniently large plant or decoration on your porch and request that your delivery person tucks the package behind it, leave it in your backyard, or conceal it in some other way.
This may not be the most secure or foolproof way, but a porch pirate scanning the area will be much more likely to see and steal a package sitting in plain sight rather than the one sitting behind your rocking chair.
What to do if your package is stolen
If you believe that your package was stolen, the first thing you should do is double-check that it actually arrived and is not just delayed.
If you have a doorbell or security camera, review your footage to make sure it was dropped off. If it was dropped off, you can use your footage to gather information about the theft. Note the timestamp of when the package was delivered and when the criminal grabbed your package.
Submit your footage to the police and the retailer to try to track down your package and, hopefully, receive a refund or replacement from the retailer.
If you don’t have cameras, check your tracking number to make sure that the shipping company confirmed the drop-off. Let the retailer know as soon as possible if your package was stolen and ask if they will either refund or replace the missing package.
